Why We Created the VillagePDX Website
The purpose of this website is to help jump start the process of creating multiple aging-in-place “villages” in the Portland, Oregon metro-area by using the Internet to identify and connect potential “village founders & members” in the different neighborhoods of Portland & in surrounding cities like Lake Oswego, Beaverton, and Milwaukie.
Since we live in the Mt. Tabor neighborhood and villages tend to be geographic in nature , we especially want to find & connect with other like-minded folks living on Portland’s east side so we can build a village to help us remain in our home as we age.
But the Portland metro-area is too spread out to be served effectively by only one village. So we also want to:
- Help neighbors in other parts of the city (and surrounding cities) connect with each other and begin the process of envisioning the villages they would like to found.
- Develop a resource website for Portland metro-area “villages-in- development” which brings together village-related quotes, articles, videos, links & blogs, as well as a survey for assessing potential members’ needs & interests.
- Provide a place for all the Portland Metro-Area Villages (which will someday exist) to share inspiration, tools, resources, marketing collaterals, bylaws, organizational designs, provider referrals, and the stories of their successes & challenges along the way.
We hope you enjoy exploring the site, learning more about the village movement, and getting inspired to connect with your neighbors and start creating a village in your own local neighborhood.
If they can do it in Boston and Washington D.C. and San Francisco and Bend and countless other cities across the country, we can do it here in Portland. So let’s do it!
